How to choose which one is right for you?

There are 3 types of smart bulbs available in India.

Type 1: The Philips Hue

Philips Hue Smart Bulbs
  • These are the ‘iPhones’ of Smart Bulbs.
  • They are premium, costly & come with the seamless experience you expect from just any other premium product.

The colour accuracy is unmatchable by any other smart bulbs in the market.

These can be controlled through Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, iOS/macOS Siri.

You should invest in Philips Hue bulbs & Hub if you wish to have more than 5 Smart Bulbs or Smart Light Strips as all the Hue bulbs & accessories connect to the Hub unlike any other Smart Bulbs in the market.

The advantage of having the Hub is that it is more secure because the communication is through Zigbee & just in case your router is compromised, your Philips Hue system is still safe.

Also, you have the advantage of adding additional accessories like Hue Sensor, Hue Tap Switch, Dimmer Switch, et cetera to the Hub that other Smart Bulbs don’t offer.

There are many apps available for Philips Hue alone that help you set-up different styles of lighting, scenes, routines, automation using 3rd party apps like Hue Essentials, Tasker(Android only), all 4 hue, Hue Ambilight(Android only), Hue Switcher, et cetera

I have 12 Smart Bulbs, 2 Hue Sensors, 2 Hue Light Strips, and a Hue Tap Switch in my home that is seamlessly connected and works flawlessly.

The routines(smart automation actions like turning on a light bulb at 6 PM every day) work even if the Internet Connection is down as all the information (routines, commands, bulb names) is sent from the Hub, not from the mobile.

The Philips Hue Sync can also sync the Hue lights to the content playing on your TV.

Overall, if you wish to have a full-fledged Smart Home, Philips Hue is the only solution that suits the need along with the brand reliability that Philips has been providing for decades.

Type 2: WiFi Smart Bulbs

Philips, Smitch, Mi Smart Bulbs(in clockwise direction)

Almost every other Smart Bulb other than Philips Hue is probably a WiFi Smart Bulb.

These bulbs connect to your 2.4GHz WiFi Router and you can control them using the respective Smart Bulb mobile app.

If you are only testing the waters with Smart Home, then you should start with these.

If you do not wish to have more than 5 Smart Bulbs, then these bulbs are both economical & you don’t have to buy a Hub separately as all these bulbs connect to your router directly.

These bulbs come with their respective Android and iOS apps, through which you can control them. You can also link them to voice assistants like Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa or Siri and control them through voice commands.

Though the functionality is similar to that of Philips Hue, it is mostly limited to what the respective mobile apps provide.

Type 3: Bluetooth Smart Bulbs

Halonix Bluetooth Smart Bulb

These are outdated & are semi-smart bulbs ideally.

These do not require any WiFi router to control the bulb as it connects through Bluetooth only.

You install the bulb, install the respective mobile app, and link the bulb using Bluetooth.

You can only operate the bulb when you are close to the bulb(within the Bluetooth range).

The ‘Halonix Bluetooth Smart Bulb’ is one such bulb.

Upcoming Type 4: Bluetooth Philips Hue Smart Bulbs

These are for those people who cannot decide whether to invest all at once in a Philips Hue system or to get a WiFi Smart bulb and regret later.

These have launched in the U.S. recently and will be available in India soon.

The same Philips Hue Bulbs with an added advantage of Bluetooth, so that you can first buy 1 or 2 bulbs to experiment with those & then get a Hub to have more bulbs.

If you are willing to wait, this would be worth the wait for your investment.

Now, before you make a purchase:

  • Make sure you already have a WiFi router with a working Internet connection always to be able to take full advantage of these Smart Bulbs.
  • There are 2 bulb base types E27 & B22, so choose carefully according to the holders at your home.
  • If required, you can always buy either the B22 to E27 or E27 to B22 converters.
  • Also, refer to the comparison chart above to get a keen idea of what suits your needs.
  • If it is for a living room or bedroom and this Smart Bulb is going to be the primary source of light, then you should prefer 10W or 12W for optimal lighting.
  • If it is for a washroom, probably a 7W or 8W should suffice.
