Significance of Eight Directions

We have four cardinal directions (North, South, East, and West) and four intercardinal directions (North-west, North-east, South-west, and South-east). Each direction signifies an aspect of life and is governed by various gods.

While North is the direction for wealth, south is for dharma. West and East are for prosperity and overall success.

Few Basic Principles of Vastu Shastra and home owners perspectives-

Shape: The rooms of your house should preferably be square or rectangular.

Room Basics:Rooms should be airy, well lit, bright, and clean. This rule also extends to the corners of each room.

Home Centre:The centre of the house should be an empty space.

Stairs and Furniture:Heavy furniture (like Almira etc.) should be kept in the South-west direction. If you are planning to build a duplex house, building stairs in this direction is a good idea.

Water:Avoid keeping plants and water features like water fountains, aquarium, painting depicting water etc. in the bedroom.

Dining Table:Ensure that your dining space is near the kitchen and not the main door.

Mirror Placement:Placing a mirror in the bedroom that reflects the sleeping couple is a strict no-no. If at all you place a mirror in the bedroom, ensure that the bed cannot be seen in it.

Gateway (entrance) of the House: Positive energy can be harnessed right at the entrance of your house with these tips:

  • Main door should be stronger and bigger than other doors in the house; it should preferably be made of teak wood.

  • Never keep the place outside your main door dark. Remember good energy is always associated with bright and cheery places.

  • Garbage bags, unwanted things, and shoes should be kept away from the main door. We don’t want visitors to cringe before entering your home.

  • Ensure that the main door opens inward. Also regularly oil its hinges to avoid creaky sounds.

Drawing Room:

  • An aquarium on the North or East wall for prosperity

  • A bright picture of sunrise in the southern wall

  • Shades of yellow, green, beige or blue on walls to infuse liveliness and vibrancy

Kitchen:

  • Keep the water sink away from the gas stove.
  • Place the fridge at the south-west corner of the kitchen.

Never let your kitchen face the washroom or share a common wall with it.

Bedroom:

  • Place the master bedroom in the South-west.

  • Never sleep with your head in the north.

  • Avoid overhanging beams in the room to enjoy good health.

  • Use solid wooden beds instead of hollow wrought-iron beds.

Study Room:

  • Select a square or rectangular shape for the study table.

  • Place the table so that one need not face a blank wall or window.

  • Keep the table in the North-east, East, or West direction.

  • Hanging bookshelves are best avoided.

Vastu for bathroom-

  • Mirrors in the bathroom should be put up on the northern or eastern wall of the bathroom. Choose square and rectangular mirrors and place them at least four or five ft from the floor.
  • The mirror in the bathroom should be placed in a high position, such that it does not reflect the toilet seat.

  • Electrical fittings, such as geysers, can be placed in the south-east side.
  • Exhaust fans, or if you have a window for ventilation, must face the east or north-east direction.

  • Washbasins should be in the east, north or north-east part of the bathroom.

  • The shower should also be located in the east, north or north-east part.

  • The washing machine should be placed in the south-east and north-west direction.

Pooja room- 1.

The best location for the mandir in the house is the north-east. If that doesn’t work for you, the north and the east corners will do too. West is permissible too if nothing else works. However, avoid locating the pooja room in the south.

2. Try to ensure that you face the north or the east while offering prayers.

3. Don’t position the pooja room under a staircase or against the wall of a bathroom, it is considered inauspicious.

4. Design the pooja ghar on the ground floor of your home for best results. Basements and upper floors are not recommended for mandirs as per Vastu.

5. Align the pooja room along the north-east, east or north if you live in a north or east direction.

Objects for positivity all around

Buddha at the main entrance-Keeping Buddha statue at the main entrance is a divine way to decorate your home. Placing a Buddha statue at the front door will safeguard you from negativity. It works well when the statue is kept towards the east.

Vastu paintings- According to Vastu, certain paintings bring good luck in your life. There are paintings affecting every sphere of life. Place paintings of seven running horses, waterfall, goldfish and flowing river to attract money. To attract better job opportunities, install paintings of endless straight paths and roads. Homes that do not have a fire element must include paintings of sunrise and candles. Also, one can place paintings of birds and flowers to strengthen mutual relationships.

Water with flowers-This is the simplest method to bring positivity in your life. Just take a beautiful bowl filled with water and add some flowers to it. You get a beautiful decor piece that is also considered auspicious in Vastu. It brings wealth to your home.

Fish aquariums-Decorating your home with aquariums can bring life to your living space. According to Vastu Shastra, placing fish aquariums at home is a way to rectify many doshas.

VASTU SHASTRA: A LOGICAL AND SCIENTIFIC APPROACH

“As we can see, Vastu Shastra is not a belief or a superstition. It is a pure Science of the Cosmos. Nothing to be ‘believed’ or ‘worshiped’. Every principle and technique has its scientific explanation behind it, and it can be observed regardless of religion or beliefs.

By strictly following these Vastu Rules, Human Race can gain quite many benefits and live peacefully. In other words, Vastu rules instruct the ways to create buildings and ‘Living in Harmony with the Earth’.

Vastu Shastra is based upon two important scientific facts:

1. Magnetic Property of the Earth and the gravitational and magnetic forces created by the materials inside the Earth.

2. Rotation of the Earth on its axis, and the centrifugal and other forces created by its movements.

Myths about vastu-  Myth 1: The Walls in the Living Room, Master Bedroom and Children's Rooms Can Be Painted in generic Colors- Like everything else in Vastu, the direction of the room is of utmost importance while choosing a colour. The direction and colour preference for the living room can be: North or North-East: Exclusively blue North-West: Blue, grey, white and even black East: Green

The direction and colour preference for the master bedroom can be: South-West: Peach preferably, but you can also opt for pink and grey South: Exclusively red West: Silver, dark blue, black

The direction and colour preference for the children's room can be: North-West: Blue.

Myth 2: The Oldest Person in the House Should Occupy the Master Bedroom

The master bedroom, preferably positioned in the south-west direction of the house, is a seat of leadership. Hence, the functional head of the family, who may or may not be the senior-most member of the family, should be assigned the master bedroom. Thus, if the father is retired, he should hand over the southwest master bedroom to the eldest son or daughter as he/she would then make a successful functional head of the family. The father, as a retired person, should move to a bedroom in the northeast which can lead him towards spirituality.

Myth 3: Mirrors Should not be Placed Opposite the bed

A mirror in the bedroom should be placed such that while sleeping, the body should not be reflected in the mirror. That means any direction from where the body is reflected, should be avoided. Also, mirrors should not be used to remedy vastu defects as it is an extremely complex and controversial procedure with very little efficacy, even if it is done right.

Myth 4: It is Auspicious to Place a Ganesha idol in the House

Lord Ganesha is a revered deity and is worshipped by people across the country. Known to ward off obstacles and for auspicious beginnings, it is a common practice to place a Ganesha idol in the house. However, it is important to pay attention to the direction of the trunk of the Ganesha idol. Ganesha with his trunk turned towards the left is widely worshipped in the northern part of the country while Ganesha with his trunk turned towards the right is seen mostly in temples, especially in the southern part of the country.

Myth 5: Mythological or Nature-Inspired Images Can be Placed Anywhere in the house- As a general rule of Vastu, any images depicting violence, disaster, or cruelty should be avoided. Even in the case of mythological pictures, images of war from the epic Mahabharata, for example, should be avoided, even if they are from a revered text. An image of Arjuna bowing to Krishna while listening to the Gita is a favoured picture. However, there can be direction-specific images that can be used to enhance the positive Vastu of the room. For example, water-based photos can be placed in the northeast part of the house while fire-related images can be in the south-east direction. Photos showing anything heavy like elephants or mountains can be placed in the south-west direction, and air-related images, depicting motion, can be placed in the north-west direction of the room.

Conclusion:

Your home may not be entirely Vastu compliant. But you may start by eliminating negative energies and correcting Vastu Doshas.

Try aligning your home with the directions and the elements of nature and see the difference yourself.
